Here’s a question for you: do you bake cookies at Christmas?
I don’t and never have— mince pies yes, cookies absolutely not— and this year my Instagram is absolutely jammed with the most elaborate cookie-baking stations I ever saw in my life. Is this an American thing? Is this an Instagram thing? Is this just a thing I somehow missed the memo on?
We are not talking one batch of biscuits for when someone calls round. This is, like, an operation: curated recipe lists, co-ordinated together, different flavours, different textures, like a home-made selection box type object. It is beyond impressive to me.
Jenny Han has this very cute YA series about three sisters (they made them into Netflix movies!) and they do this, too; it’s like, their sister thing at Christmas. I just opened up the first one to refresh my memory of the cookies they bake and oh, they are so delightful. “If I had to say why Margot loves him, I think maybe I would say it’s because we all do”— a perfect sentence about first love, and sisters, and families, and can’t you just taste the broken hearts in it already?
