Resolutions Reconsidered

it's all nice!

This year at midnight, when I put my hand in the fire to save the only resolution left to me I found I had burned everything like “Run 10km” and “Write 1000 words every morning” and “Draw every day” and what was there, still, in my hand, was this: It’s All So Nice, Do More Of It.

That was my last resolution when I had written eleven and not really believed in any of them. This year I drove myself hard; made things happen; got what I wanted; worked every day, even weekends, until Christmas. I was writing my list of ways to be driven and disciplined in 2026 and I got to eleven and thought: what I really want is more of the same. What I really want is to keep doing this, just like this, more and then more and then more of it. Which is, I realise, looking back over these posts over time, what I always want.

Last night we opened up the bedroom window and let the cold in. The moon was enormous and the frost was hard on the cars and the street and I put the patchwork quilt on the bed. I took a hot hot bath with orange and geranium oils. I wrote a list.

Last year I wanted no resolutions, and made seventy five. Many of them I kept! Many of them I kept.

Resolutions
