Listen, friends, I know Thursday afternoon is a bad time to send out a newsletter— is it?— but this is your dinner sorted for tonight and you probably have 90%, maybe even 100%, of what you need already in your house. Is it blustery and autumnal where you are? It is here. This August galloped by in a series of insane choices and long meetings. Now the rain rampages across the scaffolding and the wind has blown every last tomato from my tomato plants, which had barely begun because everything hates this garden. This garden is a wind farm and I didn’t even mean to plant the wind. Someone, I beg you: harvest this sea breeze!
Anyway, listen, I was writing this all weekend like, oh, maybe soon this guy? And then tonight I was like: no. I must cook this again. We must eat this again, now, immediately. And the people must know! So I opened up the document and finished it and sent it out at the speed of light even though it’s probably not an algorithmically great time. Unless you are nearly done for the day and want to be distracted? Maybe that. Maybe you are on the train home? Maybe? I love to commute home in the rain because it makes me feel like a real person.
Here is what happened: I read an essay about how katsu curry is everywhere now, including in McDonalds poured over chicken nuggets, and how— therefore— it is effectively passé.
Unfortunately because I am inherently passé, a sort of dated-by-design refugee from the Generic Past, the only thing that this piece made clear to me is that I truly longed to eat a lot of katsu curry. Ideally poured over chicken nuggets. I love katsu curry, especially mine: gentle, caramelly, spiced and honeyed and crispy. Clean aromatic rice. Golden hunks of freezer nuggets. Heaven to me.
Anyway, this whim was bad because I do actually yearn to be cool and cutting edge, but it was good because I knew there were emergency nuggets in the freezer. And I love, love, love to gratify a whim.
